Description

City Bank of Kansas City check, 6.25 x 2.75, filled out and signed by Harry S. Truman, payable to Robert Long for $7.50, September 3, 1925. In fine condition.

A particularly early signed check from Truman, who, in 1925 became a lieutenant colonel in the Officers Reserve Corps and was in the midst of a career change: after losing his reelection campaign as a County Court judge of Jackson County's eastern district, Truman spent two years selling automobile club memberships, a job that compelled him to return to public service. With the support of the Pendergast machine, Truman ran and won the seat of Presiding Judge of Jackson County, Missouri, a position that helped pave his way to the U.S. Senate.
