Description

Rare English-language letter from the great French realist

French writer born Marie-Henri Beyle (1783-1842) considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism. Desirable ALS signed “H. Beyle,” one page, 7.75 x 10, February 15, [1827]. Handwritten letter to Frederick Yates, in full: “I thank you very much for the tiket [sic] you send me. By some mistake of the devils, they refused admittance but to the upper galleries, so I have not seen the performance. But in Lancaster, in the last August, I have admired the efficiency and energy of your mimickal [sic] powers. I thank you anew Sir.” In fine condition, with scattered light foxing. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA. Letters from Stendahl written exclusively in English are especially rare, this being our first and only example.
