Official ‘I.O.C. President’ badge for the Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics, which is attributed to the collection of Avery Brundage, the longtime president of the International Olympic Committee. Gold-plated, 51 mm x 63 mm, 64 gm, with the two off-white ribbons measuring 83 mm in length. Bordered by bands in the colors of the Olympic rings, the badge features the rising sun of the Japanese national flag above a green bar with Olympic rings and a white enamel bar identified as “I.O.C. President.” Accompanied by its original white leather presentation box, which bears scattered light foxing.
Brundage (1887–1975) was an American sports administrator who served as the fifth president of the International Olympic Committee from 1952 to 1972. The only American and only non-European to attain that position, Brundage is remembered as a zealous advocate of amateurism and for his involvement with the 1936 and 1972 Summer Olympics, both held in Germany.
