Description

Presley sends a $5000 gift to his cousin and right-hand man, Billy Smith

Scarce 'E. A. Presley' personal check, 6 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed by Elvis Presley, "E. A. Presley," payable to "Billy or Jo Smith" for $5000, September 1974. A red pencil notation in the memo field reads: "Gift 2,500 each." In fine condition. Billy Smith was Elvis’ right-hand man and first cousin, the son of Gladys Presley’s oldest brother. When Elvis bought and moved to Graceland, so did the Smith family; Billy’s father, Travis, worked for Elvis as his chief guard, and Billy Smith and his wife Jo lived for many years behind the main house. As both a family member and a member of the ‘Memphis Mafia,’ Billy Smith was very likely Presley’s closest friend.
