Description

Confederate general (1832-1904) who surrendered Lee's army to Union General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain at Appomattox Courthouse. Civil War-dated manuscript DS, signed “J. B. Gordon, Maj. Gen.,” one page, 25 x 8, August 31, 1864. Document headed "Monthly Return of Gordon's Division, commanded by Maj. General J. B. Gordon," listing the aggregate numbers of soldiers belonging to the brigades of Evans, Terry, and York, tallied by rank, and indicating those present and absent, amounting to 14,497 men in total. A note in the lower margin reads: "Under the head of 'alterations,' the 171 marked 'deserted' have been borne upon the rolls up to this time & dropped there being no probability of their voluntary return." Signed in the lower margin by Assistant Adjutant-General R. W. Hunter and Major General J. B. Gordon. In fine condition, with overall fading, not affecting readability. A scarce and desirable war-dated format, signed just one week after Gordon was wounded above the right eye at Shepherdstown.
