Letter to Governor Ronald Reagan of California, in full: "I want to ask a favor of you, but I hasten to say that my favor involves no work on your part. Please forward this letter to one of your staff and let him give me an answer on my questions, which are these: A. In California, what is the situation with respect to the Governor's power of veto? B. Can he be over-ridden by 2/3 majority in both houses? C. Are there any unusual provisions in the California Constitution respecting the Governor's participation in legislation? D. Is the California law similar to the federal law in requiring the Governor to return vetoed legislation within 10 days? E. After the Congress has adjourned, does the California practice follow that of the federal government, namely, is the legislation automatically vetoed unless signed within 10 days. If you would pass this on to some staff officer and let him write me directly, I would be most appreciative; but please do not bother with it yourself." Eisenhower adds a handwritten postscript: "P.S. Love to Nancy—D.E." In fine condition, with the original mailing envelope stapled to the upper left corner.
Although Eisenhower retired from public life upon leaving the White House in 1961, he remained somewhat involved in politics—especially within the Republican Party—and served as an unofficial mentor to up-and-comer Ronald Reagan. He advised Reagan on foreign affairs, national security policy, and the practical aspects of running a presidential campaign. In this interesting letter, Ike takes an interest in the state of California's legislative process, inquiring about the governor's veto power.
