President Buchanan appoints a German consul for the Carolinas and Maryland

Partly-printed DS, one page, 15 x 13, December 1, 1857. President Buchanan appoints Werner Dresel as “Consul of the Grand Dukedom of Hesse-Darmstadt for the States of Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina, to reside in Baltimore.” Signed crisply at the conclusion by James Buchanan and countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. The embossed seal remains affixed to the lower left. In fine condition, with slight separation to the center vertical fold.
