Description

ALS signed “Julia D. Grant,” one page, 4.5 x 7, black-bordered 3 East 66th Street letterhead, May 16, 1890. Handwritten letter to Nevada Senator John P. Jones, a close friend of the Grant family. In part: “The papers say our foreign ministers are to be advanced both in rank and salary. Austria, I see is not mentioned….that court, now so very interesting to me, placed on the list for both rank and salary, and oblige me your old friend.” Grant adds a postscript: “Why is it that I never see you nowadays?” In fine condition. Grant’s interest in the said diplomatic position was because her first son, Frederick D. Grant, was then serving as the U.S. Minister to Austria-Hungary, a role he held until 1893.
