Description

ALS in French, signed “Fr.,” one page both sides, 5.5 x 4, August 7, 1959. An untranslated handwritten letter to his close friend, Belgian actor Stephane Audel, talking about the success of La Voix Humaine in Paris, Dialogues of the Carmelites in Vienna, and needing to go to Naples for some quiet time. He concludes the letter: “Don't write to me. I know you love me but I need solitude.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

Stephane Audel (1901-1984) was one of Francis Poulenc's close friends for more than 20 years. Audel edited the 1963 book My Friends and Myself, which contains conversations between Poulenc and Audel that reveal the story of the composer’s career, his religious beliefs, and his thoughts on fellow artists like Satie, Max Jacob, Apollinaire, Falla, Eluard, Monegger, Prokofiev, Ravel, and Stravinsky.
