From the personal collection of President Herbert Hoover and Lou Henry Hoover, consigned by Hoover's great granddaughter.
Marie Curie visited Herbert Hoover at the White House in 1929, where the president presented her with a bank draft for $50,000 to purchase a precious gram of radium for research to be conducted at a new research institution in Warsaw, Poland. The Associated Press reported that the 'President said the gift was an expression on the part of the American people of their gratitude for the 'beneficient service Madame Curie has given to all mankind.''
