Description

Scottish geologist and explorer (1858-1895) who served as the geologist and naturalist on the 1878 expedition to find a route from Dar es Salaam to Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika. In 1883, he embarked on a second expedition to establish a route from the east coast of Africa to the northern shores of Lake Victoria. He also explored the Niger River, Morocco's Atlas Mountains and the northern end of the Zambezi. Thomson's gazelle and Thomson's Falls, Nyahururu, Kenya are named after him. ALS, one page, 4.5 x 6.75, January 14, 1887. Handwritten letter to James Jackson, in full; "I shall be very happy to accept your and Mrs. Jackson's kind invitation to dinner tomorrow evening." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Thomson's hand.
