A French polymath, Pierre Beaumarchais (1732-1799) was, at various times in his life, a watchmaker, inventor, playwright, musician, diplomat, spy, publisher, horticulturist, arms dealer, satirist, financier, and revolutionary (both French and American). He is probably best remembered for his theatrical works, specifically the three Figaro plays—Le Barbier de Séville, Le Mariage de Figaro, and La Mère coupable.
