Description

Rare St. Petersburg portrait of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, signed after the successful debut of his opera The Queen of Spades

Rare 4.25 x 6 cabinet photo of Tchaikovsky by A. Pasetti of St. Petersburg, boldly signed and inscribed across the top in dark ink, and dated December 18, 1890—the day after the premiere of his opera The Queen of Spades. In good to very good condition, with overall soiling, trimmed edges, a small area of surface loss to the top center, and a heavy crease/crack passing through the signature.

Tchaikovsky's three-act opera The Queen of Spades, based on the 1834 novella of the same name by Alexander Pushkin, premiered in St. Petersburg on December 19, 1890; Czar Alexander III had attended a dress rehearsal on the 16th. Of the tremendously successful debut performance, Tchaikovsky observed: '[Lead tenor Nikolay] Figner and the Saint Petersburg orchestra… have made true miracles.'
