TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, September 8, 1959. Letter to Robin Duff, a former BBC war correspondent who covered the D-Day landings, in full: "Thank you so much for your note of greeting to Scotland. I am most appreciative of your thought of me and of your prayers for the success of my efforts to secure a just and durable peace for all the peoples of the world. With best wishes to a former comrade-in-arms." In very good condition, with overall creasing.
As president, Eisenhower enacted a policy of 'waging peace'—aiming to avoid military conflict with the Soviet Union, and forestalling the nuclear arms race by promoting peaceful uses of nuclear material. He also supported the newly formed United Nations, expressing in 1953 that, despite its flaws, the 'United Nations represents man's best organized hope to substitute the conference table for the battlefield.' A fantastic letter by the president, connecting his wartime career with his peacekeeping efforts as president.
