Description

ALS in French, signed “H. Matisse,” one page, 5.25 x 8, December 10, 1943. Handwritten wartime letter to an art dealer, "Monsieur Brame," written from Vence, where he would later build his famous chapel. In full (translated): "The girl that I was waiting for has not arrived yet. She has not been seen at the station and may have gotten lost. It is important that you learn this. I hope you have good news from your family and I hope you will not be in Perpignan when this letter will arrive." In fine condition. This interesting letter alludes to wartime anxieties in occupied France—any 'missing' person might have been feared to be arrested, or worse. Vence would finally be liberated by Canadian and American forces on August 27, 1944.
