TLS, two pages, 8.25 x 10.75, The American National Red Cross letterhead, June 19, 1895. Letter to Clara Barton Clinton, in full: “Your letter of the 26th inst. was most welcome; I am always glad to hear from you and glad that you write me so familiarly. You will not wonder that, in some way, you seem almost to belong to me; and any strangeness or restraint on your part would be painful to me. I shall live in the hope that I shall see you before long and should be glad to find an hour to visit you when passing Bordentown.
Your Father and Mother seemed partly like associates and partly like children to me. I had such a loving care for them that even their children seem, in some way, to be connected with me. You must not feel, my dear girl, that your life is useless, you are doubtless filling your role worthily and bravely and it will count, in the end, with the rest.
I am preparing to leave Washington for a summer outing of several weeks at Thousand Islands, where I spent a similar time last year. I expect to leave soon, and after that time my address will be: Alexandria Bay, Jefferson County, N.Y., until my return. Please give a great deal of love to the household of sisters, believing me, as always, the loving and sincere friend of all.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.
