ALS signed “W. J. Bryan,” one page, 8.5 x 11, December 19, [1907]. Handwritten letter to Mrs. W. H. Hinrichsen, in full: "I have just read of Will’s death and hasten to extend sympathy. His friends were legion and they share—as far as such sorrows can be shared—your sorrow with you. He did a large work and we shall miss him." In fine condition, with short splits to the ends of the intersecting folds.
The “Will” referenced was William H. Hinrichsen (1850-1907) Secretary of State for Illinois (1893-97), U.S. Congressmen (1897-99), and newspaper publisher. He died on December 18, 1907, the day prior to Bryan’s letter of sympathy.
