Description

American statesman (1801-1872) who served as secretary of state in the Lincoln administration and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. His greatest political achievement was the purchase of Alaska from Russia, derided by contemporary skeptics as 'Seward's Folly.' Civil War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “William H. Seward,” one page, 11.5 x 18, February 12, 1862. Passport document, in part: "I the undersigned Secretary of State of the United States of America, hereby request all whom it may concern to permit safely and freely to pass Rev. Franklin S. Rising, a Citizen of the United States, and in case of need to give him all lawful Aid and Protection." Rev. Rising's personal details are filled out on the left side. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining. Interestingly, Rev. Franklin Rising was a close friend of celebrated American author Mark Twain.
