Queen Jadwiga, also known as Hedwig, was the first woman to be crowned as monarch of the Kingdom of Poland, reigning from 1384 until her death in 1399; she was venerated in Poland throughout the ensuing centuries, beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1986, and canonized in 1997.
