The phonetic symbols used by Leary represent a syllable in Japanese. This one component of the Japanese writing system is called Katakana, which is used mostly for foreign names, especially names in English. In this case ‘Timothy Leary’ (timoshii-ri a ri). Dr. Leary visited Japan in the summer of 1990 wanting to reach out to young Japanese who knew about ‘virtual reality.’ It stands to reason that he was taught how to write his name as such so that a Japanese person could pronounce his name.
