Legal document penned entirely - and signed twice - by John Rutledge, early into his political career

Statesman (1739-1800), who served as the first governor of South Carolina following the signing of the United States Constitution, and was the second chief justice of the Supreme Court, succeeding John Jay. Very rare twice-signed ADS, signed within the text as “Mr. Rutledge” and endorsed on the reverse as "Rutledge," one page both sides, 8.25 x 6.75, August 19, 1763. A handwritten legal document from the courts of Charleston, South Carolina, penned entirely in the hand of John Rutledge, who writes, in part: “On Motion of Mr. Rutledge Attorney for the Defendant it is ordered that he have Leave pursuant to the Statute in such Case made & provided to plead the several Matters following which he judges necessary for his Defence in this Action to wit—First - Not guilty, Secondly - Not guilty within six Months before Action brought that is the Limitation Act, Thirdly - a Justification of the Words charged…to have been spoken by Defend’r.” Signed at the conclusion by Judge Robert Pringle, and endorsed on the reverse by Rutledge, who adds docketing notations above. In very good condition, with old tape repairs to fold splits and edge tears, and irregular paper loss to the edges. Accompanied by two engravings of Rutledge, both bearing facsimile signatures. A very early handwritten document from Rutledge, whose political career began in South Carolina's Commons House of Assembly just two years prior.
