Description

Two items: a personal check, 8.5 x 3.5, filled out in typed and signed by Tennessee Williams, payable to the Julius Lefkowitz Company for $242.74, dated September 28, 1978; and a hardcover 1932 ‘Savitar’ yearbook from the University of Missouri, 457 pages, 9.24 x 12.25, which depicts Williams as a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity on page 252, which lists him as “Williams, Thomas L., St. Louis, ‘33.” In overall fine condition, with general handling wear to the yearbook. The check is encapsulated and graded by PSA/DNA as "GEM MT 10."

From 1929 to 1931, Williams attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he enrolled in journalism classes and joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Willaims did not fit in well with his fraternity brothers and after he failed a military training course in his junior year, his father pulled him out of school and put him to work at the International Shoe Company factory. His dislike of his new 9-to-5 routine drove Williams to write prodigiously, setting a goal of writing one story a week.
