Description

Major French symbolist poet and critic (1842-1898) whose work anticipated and inspired several revolutionary artistic schools of the early 20th century, such as Dadaism, Surrealism, and Futurism. ALS signed with his initials, “SM,” penned on one of his 4 x 2.5 personal calling cards, no date but postmarked March 1898. Handwritten note to Calixte Toesca, referring to poet and art critic Emmanuel Signoret. In full (translated): 'I am sorry, dear Sir, to have missed you. I am too busy with work and errands these days to give you a certain appointment, except for Tuesday: so come, between four and seven o'clock, and we will talk about Signoret, you and I, among others who also hold him dear." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Mallarme's own hand.
