The 1940 Summer Olympics were originally to be hosted in Tokyo, Japan, but Japanese organizers withdrew in 1938 because of the Second Sino-Japanese War. They were rescheduled to take place in Helsinki, Finland, but ultimately canceled due to the outbreak of World War II. Helsinki would finally host the Olympic Games in 1952.
