Fabulous ALS, signed “Cynthia by the sea,” four total pages, 7.5 x 9.75, postmarked June 13, 1962. Addressed from Liverpool, a warm and lengthy handwritten letter from Cynthia Powell to her friend, noted Beatles photographer, Astrid Kirchherr. In addition to discussing her reunion with John Lennon and the Beatles, who had frequently returned from Germany, Powell fills her letter with numerous wonderful small sketches of herself, Astrid, a tree, a star, flowers, a birthday cake, and more.
The letter, in part; “Please, before I begin, can you forgive me for taking such a long time in replying to your lovely letters and drawings and everything…But before I say any more HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY DEAREST FRIEND ALL THE WAY AWAY IN GERMANY. Astrid, how are you now? I know you must be very lonely now that the Beatles are back in Liverpool again but I know you must be looking forward to coming here soon. I can’t wait to see you again. You must know that. I am very happy now that John is back with me again but I only wish you could have some of my happiness.
The Beatles sound as marvellous as ever (especially John hee! hee!) and their first night back in the CAVERN was marvellous. It was so full they are even more popular than ever now it’s great. Oh Astrid if only you were here. I hate to think of you all alone and in Germany when we are all here it’s so unfair…John bought me a beautiful leather coat as a present and black polo and a nighty and a lot of little things!!!…John thought your drawings were wonderful and will write to you very soon. The Scotsman with the head of John was a scream! All your drawings are pinned up around my room…I will write again very soon so don’t think because John is back again I will stop writing and forget you.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed by Powell, who signs again, “To Miss Astrid in Hamburg, from Miss Cynthia in Liverpool by the [sea],” and adds wonderful dancing flower sketches on the reverse and writes: “Daisies dancing and singing for Astrid.” Shortly after the couple learned they were to have a child, Powell and Lennon were married on August 23, 1962, at the Mount Pleasant register office in Liverpool, roughly two months after Powell wrote this letter.
