American general in the Revolutionary War and a delegate in the Continental Congress (1740-1795) who served as governor of New Hampshire. He is best remembered for commanding the Sullivan Expedition in 1779, a scorched earth campaign against the Iroquois towns that had taken up arms against the American revolutionaries. Revolutionary War-dated LS signed as General of the Continental Army, "Jno Sullivan," one page, 7.25 x 9, August 3, 1778. Letter to Pay Master General Benjamin Stelle, ordering payment of $12,000 to "Thomas Green Esq'r Commissary of Military Stores for the Department of Rhode Island…for the use of his Department and this shall be your sufficient warrant given at Head Quarters." The second blank integral page has been professionally inlaid to a slightly larger sheet. In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining, and a few old tape repairs on the reverse. George Washington selected Sullivan, a major general, to assume command of Fort Barton and to prepare for an invasion of Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island.
