Rare winner’s medal issued for the London 2012 Summer Olympics, awarded to a member of the iconic Brazil Olympic football team. Silver, 85 mm, 431 gm, by David Watkins. The front of the medal features text across the top, “XXX Olympiad London 2012,” above the winged Nike over Panathinaikon Stadium with the Acropolis in the background; the reverse features the emblem of the London Games against an abstract linear background. Engraved on the bottom edge with the event's name: "Football, Men." Retains its original purple ribbon, with “London 2012” and the Olympic rings embroidered in white. Complete with its heavily worn hinged black case.
Brazil's vaunted 2012 Olympic soccer team—led by the likes of Neymar, Thiago Silva, Marcelo, Hulk, and Oscar—failed to deliver the country's first-ever Olympic gold medal in football, losing 2-1 to Mexico in the championship match. With six goals, striker Leandro Damião was the top scorer in the tournament. A supremely desirable silver medal affiliated with a legendary team.
