Significant wooden gavel used by Vice President John Nance Garner in the United States Senate in 1939. The gavel measures 10″ long and boasts several dings to one of the hammerhead surfaces, evidently from Garner's repeated use. In fine condition, with expected signs of wear. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from his secretary, E. R. Garner, on letterhead from "The Vice President's Chamber," in part: "A gavel is being mailed to you today under separate cover, which has been used by Mr. Garner in the Senate to give it a bit of historical background and which goes to you with his best wishes." Also includes the original mailing envelope for the letter (with facsimile free frank) and two original press photos of Garner in the Senate.
