Description

American adventurer, educator, and author (1847-1917), who was known as ‘Captain Jack’ and as ‘The Poet Scout.' A master Wild West storyteller and a hugely popular performer in the late nineteenth century, Crawford became a national celebrity after his daring ride of 350 miles in six days to carry news to Fort Laramie of Gen. George Crook’s victory at the Battle of Slim Buttes during the Great Sioux War. Uncommon 4.25 x 6.25 print of the 'Poet Scout,' playfully signed in ink with a poem: "This Shaddowgraff will make you laff, but here's my love, And—J. W. Crawford, Capt. Jack, 1/23/09." Matted to an overall size of 7 x 9. In fine condition, with two marginal stains.
