Description

German-American astronomer (1813-1890) at the Litchfield Observatory of Hamilton College, known as a pioneer in the study and visual discovery of asteroids. ALS signed “C. H. F. Peters,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, September 21, 1859. Handwritten letter from "Hamilton College," inquiring with concerns about the accuracy of his instruments. In part: "I write in some anxiety about our Clock, which yesterday, without any ostensible reason, stopped at 0'16m 25.5s. I put it into motion again at 4h30m, and it stopped again at 6h32m 25.5s. At 8h I put it into motion again, and watched until eleven. The arc of vibration decreased from 24° to 14.5° (it was usually 20° before), and this morning it was 15°…Fortunately the clock has not stopped again, but it has put me into great consternation. Can you possibly give me any elucidation, what might be the reason?…I did not make any particular observations upon the arc of vibration for some time past." In very good to fine condition, with a few small stains and small edge separations to folds.
