Participation medal issued for the 1956 Cortina Winter Olympics. Bronze, 45 mm, 49 gm, by Constantino Affer. The front features the head of Victory crowned with Olympic rings and encircled with raised text, "VII Giochi Olimpici Invernali"; the reverse depicts a snowflake over Mt. Pomagagnon, with raised text, "Citius, Altius, Fortius, Cortina 1956." A desirable example of the dramatic Cortina commemoration medal as awarded to athletes.
This particular bronze medal is accompanied by an original blue leather presentation case, which was normally presented with either gilt silver or silver Cortina participation medals. Examples of these were gifted to members of the International Olympic Committee, International Ski Federation, and Italian National Olympic Committee.
