Description

Military officer (1834-1889) who fought in the Civil War and against Native Americans in the West, but is best known for failing to come to Custer's aid during the Battle of Little Bighorn. Scarce Civil War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “M. A. Reno, Capt. 1st U. S. Cav'y,” one page, 8 x 10, July 27, 1863. Official Union Army discharge document, which states that “Jacob E. Barr, Captain of Company E, 178th Regiment of Penn’a Infantry Volunteers who was enrolled on the Twenty-second day of November [1862] to serve nine months is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States…by reason of Expiration of Enlistment.” Signed at the conclusion by Marcus Reno and countersigned by Colonel James Johnson as Regiment Commander. Interestingly, an unknown hand has added “Union Forever” to the scroll in the upper eagle engraving. In fine condition.
