Description

Remarkable 1963 color Beatles centerfold signed backstage at the Gaumont Cinema

Rare color 20.25 x 13.5 souvenir centerfold from the British magazine Today featuring the Beatles with their instruments, signed in fountain pen by John Lennon, and in ballpoint by Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Affixed to a lightweight cardstock sheet and in very good condition, with heavy overall creasing, stains to the corners, and poor contrast to parts of Paul's and George's signatures. Fully signed, uninscribed color images of the Beatles in this large size are extremely scarce.

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks and a detailed letter of provenance from the original recipient, in part: "In the Autumn of 1963, my two friends Barbara and Valerie Green and I decided to find a way of meeting the Beatles who were to play in the Gaumont cinema in Doncaster on 10th December. Barbara and Valerie who were members of the local church choir in Hexthorpe, Doncaster, wrote a song about The Beatles and then I wrote to the manager of the Gaumont cinema telling him what they had done. He invited us all to the cinema so he could hear for himself and then afterwards agreed that we could go backstage on the night of the show to meet The Beatles. On the night, the town centre was swarming with teenage girls and we could not get into the cinema, so we went across the road and telephoned the manager who instructed us to make our way to the main doors where we would be allowed inside. Once inside and backstage, Barbara and Valerie sang their song to The Beatles and we gave them all a present of Parkinsons Butterscotch (which was made in Doncaster at the time) and a comb each. We asked for their autographs—I had with me an autograph album and a magazine centrefold with their pictures on it. They all signed my album with a personal dedication and the centrefold with a straightforward signature. Afterwards we were given seats on the front row to watch the show."

Additionally includes a vintage glossy press photograph of the girls with Paul McCartney and George Harrison backstage at the show and an original newspaper article detailing the event.
