Description

Sturges commends Wilder and Brackett for their work on The Lost Weekend

Two quick TLSs signed “Preston,” both one page, 5.5 x 8.5 California Pictures Corporation letterhead, both dated to December 7, 1945. The first to director Billy Wilder: “Ten thousand congratulations to you on ‘The Lost Weekend.’ I know how you must feel. Keep up the good work.” The second is to screenwriter and producer Charles Brackett: “My heartfelt congratulations to you for the enormous success of ‘The Lost Weekend.’” In overall very good to fine condition, with paper loss along the top edges.

The 1945 film The Lost Weekend was a huge commercial and critical success. Directed by Wilder, who helped adapt the screenplay with Brackett, and starring Ray Milland and Jane Wyman, the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also shared the Grand Prix at the first Cannes Film Festival, making it one of only three films—the other two being Marty (1955) and Parasite (2019)—to win both the Academy Award for Best Picture and the highest award at Cannes.
