Description

Partly-printed DS, signed "James Madison" as president and "Ja's Monroe" as secretary of state, one page, 16 x 10.25, January 18, 1814. President Madison appoints John B. Barton of Rhode Island as "Inspector of the Revenue for the Port of Providence." Signed neatly at the conclusion by both James Madison and James Monroe. The original embossed white paper seal remains affixed to the lower left. In very good condition, with overall creasing, multiple folds, scattered small stains, and tears, chips, and toning to the edges.
