British novelist (1898-1981) and the elder brother of the better-known Evelyn Waugh. Alec is perhaps best known for his controversial debut novel, The Loom of Youth, and for his 1955 novel Island in the Sun, which when adapted for film, secured from Hollywood the greatest amount ever paid for the use of a novel at that time.
