American engineer, inventor, marksman, and commanding colonel (1824-1893) of the United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiments during the American Civil War. He was the inventor of the Berdan rifle, the Berdan centerfire primer, and other weapons and accessories. Rare Civil War-dated mailing envelope, 5 x 3, addressed by another hand to “Mrs. J. H. Carr, Fremont, N.H.,” and signed vertically along the left side by Hiram Berden, “Soldiers Letter, H. Berden, Coo. Com’dg, 1st Regt., U.S. Sharpshooters.” Reverse is dated April 23, 1863. In fine condition.
