Description

ALS signed “T. Carlyle,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, July 17, 1855. Lengthy handwritten letter, in part: "I hope you will have the charity to read the three enclosed Documents, which I have arranged into some order for you after (not without difficulty) making out the meaning of them for myself. It is a painful little business to look at;—and I know not what to do with it, except address it to you, not having myself the least acquaintance with Mr. Chalon." He goes on to ask what became of a "memorial presented to Lord Palmerston" (another "melancholy business") and weighs in on some further matters pertaining to pensions. In fine condition, with a few edge nicks and a rusty paperclip impression to the top.
