British Army officer (1860-1933) who is the only soldier in the history of the British Army to have risen from an enlisted rank to its highest rank of field marshal; he served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS)—the professional head of the British Army—from 1916 to 1918 during World War I. ALS signed “W. R. Robertson, F. M.,” one page, 4.5 x 7, March 13, 1921. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in part: "I can only reply that owing to the hard times in which poor men of my class live I am unable to help your club….all I can do is to assure you that clubs such as the one to which you refer have my full approbation." In fine condition, with a light rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.
