Description

Influential detective novelist (1888-1959) best known for The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. DS, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 14, 1944. Document regarding Chandler's employment with Paramount Pictures, in full: "Please take notice that your employment agreement with the undersigned corporation dated November 16, 1943, will terminate on February 26, 1944, at the end of said day." Boldly signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by Raymond Chandler. In fine condition. Chandler had a love/hate relationship with Hollywood, feeling that screenwriters did not get the recognition they deserved, though well paid by the studios. He worked with Paramount Pictures from the summer of 1943 through 1946, signing three separate contracts with them—two for 13 weeks a piece, and one for three years (which he did not fulfill). The contract discussed here was the second, signed in 1943 while Double Indemnity was in post-production. He worked principally as a 'dialogue doctor,' salvaging weak scripts. His first original screenplay, 'The Blue Dahlia,' would be produced by Paramount in 1946.
