Description

Commemorative medallic plaque issued in 1934 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the revival of the modern Olympics at Athens. Bronze, 50 mm x 68 mm, 113 gm. The plaque portrays the head of Zeus holding Victory, as used on the winner's medals in 1896 and 1906, with legend in Greek below: "In commemoration of the Olympics." Reverse is blank. Complete with its original case. In 1894, Pierre de Coubertin organized a congress that created the modern Olympics, established the IOC, and chose Athens as the first host site for the revived Games.
