Commemorative medal issued in 1934 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the revival of the modern Olympics at Athens. Bronze, 67 mm x 60 mm, 141 gm, by Huguenin Freres & Co. Both sides depict Grecian landmarks, encircled by bilingual text in Greek and French: "Retabblissement des Jeux Olympiades, Athenes, 1894-1934, XL Anniversaire." Complete with its original case. In 1894, Pierre de Coubertin organized a congress that created the modern Olympics, established the IOC, and chose Athens as the first host site for the revived Games.
