Description

TLS as president, signed “Harry,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, March 20, 1947. Letter to Edward D. McKim of the Mutual Benefit Health & Accident Association, in part: "I appreciated your letter of the seventeenth about Judge Simmons, and I am certainly happy to have your frank statement on the subject. Glad you liked the Message to Congress and appreciate very much what you said about Margaret." President Truman adds a handwritten postscript: "I covered up. It will take a week to answer all the wires and letters about Margie." Handsomely mounted, matted, and framed to an overall size of 14 x 16. In fine condition.

Provenance: from the estate of Senator Carl Levin. A lifelong Democrat, ardent advocate for civil rights, and staple of the United States Senate from 1979 to 2015, Senator Levin was also a longtime client of RR Auction. As a collector, he favored his political heroes—Harry S. Truman, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King, Jr.—as well as those figures emblematic of the American spirit, like Robert Frost, Joe Louis, and Helen Keller.
