Description

Scarce 1832 Naval commission from President Andrew Jackson

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14.75 x 18.25, December 22, 1832. President Jackson appoints Peter Turner as “Lieutenant in the Navy, to rank as such from the 20th of December 1832, in the service of the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Andrew Jackson and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Levi Woodbury. The embossed Navy Department seal remains affixed to the lower vignette. In fine condition, with the signature several shades light, but entirely legible. Peter Turner (1803-71) spent his entire career in the U.S. Navy, serving in both the Mexican and Civil Wars and becoming a commodore in 1863. Naval appointments by President Jackson remain uncommon.
