Description

ALS signed “Fillmore, Hall & Haven, Per. Millard Fillmore,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9, July 19, 1836. Addressed from Buffalo, New York, a handwritten letter from Fillmore to William Campbell, the Surveyor General, inquiring whether his client can obtain title to a small portion of land then owned by the state. In part: “The purchaser refuses to rectify this mistake, and Mr. O’Flying is driven to the unpleasant alternative of procuring a title to his rod of land from the state, or going into an unpleasant and expensive chancery litigation, or losing the pay for his land. He is anxious at almost any sacrifice to avoid litigation. He therefore wishes to know if he can procure the title to this rod of land of the state, and if so what is to be paid.” At the conclusion, Fillmore signs in his capacity as the partner handling the case. In fine condition.
