Description

Dylan writes the words to his classic 1966 love song 'Just Like a Woman'

Handwritten lyrics by Bob Dylan for his song, “Just Like a Woman,” from his 1966 album Blonde on Blonde, one page, 8.25 x 11.75, Scandic Holmenkollen Park Hotel stationery, written in black ink and signed at the conclusion, "Bob Dylan, 2013."

The lyrics, in full:

"Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
Everybody knows that baby's got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
Have fallen from her curls
She takes just like a woman yes she does she aches just like a woman
She makes love just like a woman but she breaks just like a little girl

Queen Mary she's my friend
Yes I believe I'll go see her again
Nobody has to guess that baby can't be blessed
Til she sees finally that she's like all the rest
With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls
She takes just like a woman yes she does and she aches just like a woman
She makes love just like a woman but she breaks just like a little girl

It was raining from the first I was dying there of thirst
So I came in here
And your long time curse hurts but what's worse
is this pain in here I can't stay in here ain't it clear

That I just can't fit
Yes I believe it's time for us to quit
When we meet again introduced as friends
Please don't let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world
You fake just like a woman and you ache just like a woman
Yes make love just like a woman but you break just like a little girl.” In fine condition.

Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA and by a 2014 letter of authenticity from Jeff Rosen, president of the Bob Dylan Music Company, which reads: "This letter certifies that the handwritten lyrics to JUST LIKE A WOMAN written on Holmenkollen Park Hotel Rica Stationery is an authentic Bob Dylan manuscript. The document, one of two, was written, signed and dated 2013, in his own hand.”

One of the many enduring songs from Dylan’s 1966 double album Blonde on Blonde, ‘Just Like a Woman,’ although unsubstantiated by the songwriter himself, is widely believed to have been inspired by Andy Warhol superstar and NYC underground icon Edie Sedgwick, with whom Dylan shared a brief relationship. While some believe the song to be based on Joan Baez, many of the lyrics seem more closely associated with Sedgwick, with lines that address drug use and wealth, “with her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls,” and an apparent lack of emotional refinement, “She makes love just like a woman but she breaks just like a little girl,” traits that have since become synonymous with Sedgwick.
