J. Edgar Hoover on the yearly "cost of crime"—"estimated at $15,000,000,000, or $120 for every citizen"

TLS signed “J. E. Hoover,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Federal Bureau of Investigation letterhead, February 3, 1938. Letter to Nicholas Pelliccio in New Haven, Connecticut, in part: "I regret that I cannot be of assistance to you regarding the highest cost of crime in the United States during past years. The yearly cost, however, is estimated at $15,000,000,000, or $120 for every citizen." In very good to fine condition, with some foxing, rippling, and mounting remnants to reverse.
