Virginian lawyer, judge, and politician (1790-1844) who served as Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of State in President Tyler's administration. Upshur was instrumental in negotiating the secret treaty that led to the 1845 annexation of Texas and played a key role in ensuring that it was admitted to the US as a slave state. He was among six killed in an accidental explosion at an official function on the USS Princeton.
