ALS signed “Wm. Ellery, Coll'r,” one page, 6.5 x 3, February 15, 1804. Handwritten letter to his grandson Walter Channing, in full: "The following is a copy of a letter received from the Compt'r of the Treasury by the last Mail. Be pleased to furnish me with the copies therein mentioned." In fine condition. Only a few months before Channing enrolled at Harvard College, Ellery introduced his grandson to the Comptroller of the Treasury Gabriel Duvall, the future Supreme Court Justice, in hopes the former would find interest in studying law. Channing would later be expelled from Harvard for his participation in the Rotten Cabbage Rebellion in 1807.
