Description

World War II-dated “Target Information Sheet” prepared for American Forces in Nazi Germany, dated February 23, 1945, three pages, 8.5 x 13.25, marked along the top of the first page, “Secret” and “Not To Be Taken Into The Air.” The sheet, identified as “A.I.3.c. (1),” lists the following in the upper border: “Op No. GN 5062,” “A.M. No. 3(d)150,” “Place Nieder-Sachswerfen near Nordhausen,” “Category Land Armaments,” and “Sub catgy. Armaments Factories.” The report offers a detailed description of the potential bombing target, including vital parts, decoys, and camouflage, and includes an additional sheet related to “Geological Formations Found at Nieder-Sachswerfen.” Of particular interest is a section pertaining to “Southern Area (Kohnstein Hill),” which reads, in part: “This works known as Mittelwerk Nieder-Sachswerfen is believed to be the largest and most important underground installation in Germany. It is reported to have begun production of the A-4 rocket in the tunnels of the southern area in the Autumn of 1943 under the direction of personnel transferred from Peenemunde.” Bottom right corner is marked “Reproduced by 942nd ENGR AVN TOPO BN 325th PWR, US Army.” In very good condition, with light creasing, short tears, and edge toning.
